Do I have to install a driver for UAX220?
UAX220 is USB Audio 1.0 compatible. This means that no additional driver is necessary to use it with applications based on standard driver protocols (DirectSound fo Windows XP, ALSA for Linux, CoreAudio for Mac OS X). For ASIO driver, see the FAQ about ASIO.
Is there an anlog input gain adjustment on UAX220?
No. The analog input gain is fixed. A +10 dBu input signal is recored at 0 dBfs.
Which sampling frequencies are supported by UAX220?
By default, UAX220 works with a fixed internal sampling frequency of 48 Khz. Files of other frequencies can be recorded / played back, in which case the operating system uses a software sampling frequency conversion.
Under Windows XP only, if you want UAX220 to work at another internal sampling frequency (because you don't want to hear about sampling frequency conversions), the firmware can be updated (see Downloads-drivers and firmware). But be aware that when this firmware is loaded, playback and recording cannot be done at different sampling frequencies. If two applications are launched (one for playback and one for recording), UAX220 is set at the sampling frequency defined by the first application. So for instance if the first application records at 44.1 Khz, and the second application plays a 48 Khz file, the real playback sampling frequency will be 44.1 Khz (so the file will be played at a slower rate!). Possible internal sampling frequencies are then: 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, and 48 Khz.
What type of laptop do you recommend with UAX220?
UAX220 is supposed to work with any laptop equipped with a USB1.1 or USB2.0 laptop. Make sure the laptop provides enough processing power and RAM for your favorite applications.
However, we have noticed a connection problem on A"cer Travelmate 291LMi", where sometimes the system returns an error like "Peak of current on the USB hub; USB device cannot be started" is displayed when connecting UAX220 (although UAX220 is compliant with USB recommendations about current consumption).
I regularly hear some pops and clicks when playing through UAX220 on my laptop. Any workaround?
This problem may be due to the energy saving management under Windows. Please read an explanation and workaround suggested by Microsoft .
Can I record in mono under Linux?
No. UAX220 is seen as a stereo only device through ALSA. Unlike Windows, ALSA does not emulate mono recording on a stereo device.
Is there an ASIO driver for UAX220?
A thrid party ASIO driver is available at www.usb-audio.com. This driver allows a latency of about 5ms at 48 Khz. It also proposes a muti-client mode (ASIO+DirectSound) but with a longer latency.
It is also possible to use a generic ASIO driver from http://www.asio4all.com/. This driver is free and is designed to work with any WDM audio device. Latency is not optimized as in the driver from usb-audio.com.
Is UAX220 compatible with USB1.1 and USB2.0 ports?
Yes. UAX220 has an USB1.1 interface (as it is a stereo audio device, there is no advantage that it has an USB2.0 interface).
So it can be connected to USB1.1 and USB2.0 ports.
Which operating systems are supported by UAX220?
UAX220 is designed to work under Windows Vista,Windows XP, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Under Windows Vista, if the system re-installs the device after you change the bit resolutioon and sampling frequency through the application UAXManager, we recommend that you update your UAX. To do so, please download UAXManager v02.01a from the Downloads-Applications, and firmware v01.03 from Downloads-Drivers & Firmware.
Can I use two UAX on my laptop?
Yes. But it is recommended to use them on two USB ports managed by separate USB controllers.
When two UAX are connected to the same USB controller, power consumption may be too high for this controller, in which case one UAX may not be recognized, or may disconnect sometimes.
Another point is that two UAX will not be able to work simultaneously in full duplex when connected to the same USB controller.
